Analysis of Needs Assessment

Analysis of Needs Assessment

In order to assess the impact of recent stressful events on family resilience and personal mental health of Hong Kong families, and to further promote the awareness on family resilience among the general public, the PolyU research team successfully collected data from 1,020 families between July and December 2021. Out of these,  818 (80.2%) were intact families and 202 (19.8%) were single-parent families. The mean ages of fathers, mothers, and children (from primary five to junior college) in the sample were 51.2 , 46.6 and 16.4 years old respectively. The results showed that the social event and the COVID-19 pandemic had a general impact on the family relationship and mental health of the respondents. The results also revealed that psychological trauma caused by stress faced by family members would affect not only themselves, but also the emotion and mental health of other family members. However, "family resilience" could provide protective factors to family members by mitigating the negative effect of depression, anxiety and stress.
